Sometimes the most meaningful moments find you when you least expect them.
We were sitting at a cozy table inside the Bier Market on Esplanade in downtown Toronto. It was quiet. The kind of peaceful vibe you get late at night when the city has slowed down just enough for you to really see people.
Our server, Tara, didn’t seem overly excited. She wasn’t wearing a big smile or giving off any loud energy—and that’s okay. People are allowed to just be. But what struck us was how easy it is to make assumptions based on the surface. We’re all so quick to judge someone’s energy, demeanor, or presence without ever asking, “What’s going on in their world?”
We sat, ate, chatted, and just before we wrapped up the night, we decided to speak with her—not just order and leave, but really speak with her. What unfolded was beautiful.
Tara lit up. Her entire spirit shifted. She shared her dreams. Her heart. Her life. And we listened.
We listened to the story beneath the surface. And that’s when we were reminded—again—that we all carry so much more within us than we show on the outside.
Every person is a living story. Every soul has a spark.
That night, we handed Tara one of our Discovered Souls gratitude cards. On the front it read:
“From small beginnings come great things.”
We had no idea the timing would be so perfect. She opened it and paused. That small card carried the weight of something deeper. It meant something to her, and in return, her openness meant something to us.
This wasn’t just about a dinner or a kind server. It was about seeing someone for who they are. Taking a moment to slow down and say:
“You matter. We see you. And we’re grateful for you.”
Tara became our Grateful Soul #6. And we’ll never forget her light.
To everyone reading this—slow down today. Ask someone how they’re doing. Really ask. Maybe even share a word of encouragement or gratitude. Because when you do, you not only open their heart—you open your own.
We are all children of God. We are all lights in this world. And it only takes one small act of presence to remind someone of their own.
Thank you, Tara, for reminding us of that.
